MUG WEEKLY WORK
Students will work on ONE sentence weekly for the first semester, and they will work on TWO sentences weekly for the second semester. During the second semester, the second sentence will be used for graded assessment. At the same time, we will be completing daily grammar practice using short, independent and guided mini-lessons on different topics. This will be a spiraling grammar study that will allow students to build on prior knowledge, practice new skill sets, and become more and more adept at applying more complex concepts along the way.
MUG Daily Grammar Practice—Three-Level Analysis & Correction of Mechanical Errors
Instructions: During each five-day week, you’ll have daily grammar practice. We work on only two sentences per week (only one sentence for the first semester). The sentences are of varying degrees of difficulty. We will put the weekly MUG sentence on the overhead, and you will be required to work on the daily activity for the sentences as a bell-ringer activity. All work should be completed in your MUG binder on the sheets you have been provided! Keep ALL notes for the entire year!
Level 1 -- On each Monday, you’ll identify parts of speech including noun (type), pronoun (type, case, person), verb (type and tense), adverb, adjective, article, preposition, conjunction (type), interjection, infinitive, gerund, and participle. You may refer to your notebook to help you. You should also make ANY corrections that you need to make. We will check ON THURSDAY to make sure you made ALL corrections. You will NOT start out being able to do ALL of this! You will start with BASIC parts of speech and go from there as you learn more and more about each part of speech.
Level 2-- On each Tuesday, you’ll identify sentence parts including simple and complete subject, simple and complete predicate (transitive or intransitive verb), direct object, indirect object, predicate nominative, predicate adjective, appositive or appositive phrase, prepositional phrase (adjective or adverb), object of preposition, noun of direct address Again, refer to your notes to help you! We will talk about each of these sentence parts AFTER you do your warm up. You will NOT start out being able to do ALL of this! You will start with simple subjects and predicates and will build up to identifying more and more complex sentence parts as you move through the DGP mini-lessons.
Level 3-- On each Wednesday, you’ll identify clauses & phrases (independent, adverb dependent clauses, adjective dependent clauses, noun dependent clauses), infinitive phrase, object of infinitive, participial phrase, object of participle, gerund phrase, object of gerund. We will also identify sentence type/structure (simple, compound, complex, compound-complex), and purpose/function (declarative, interrogative, exclamatory, imperative). We will check this together after you have USED YOUR NOTES to attempt this independently! You will NOT start out being able to do ALL of this!
Correction of Mechanical Errors-- On each Thursday, you’ll add capitalization and punctuation including end punctuation, commas, semicolons, apostrophes, underlining, and quotation marks that have not been made BEFORE now. We will look at the answer keys to see if all corrections have been made, and we will talk about any RULES we can identify for each of the corrections.
