What is Mass Customized Learning??
The district is making a move to incorporate MCL in every classroom in a variety of ways. In our classroom, I intend to use a blended learning approach in order to accomplish this goal. We will participate in a variety of activities on a weekly basis. Here are some methods and websites we will use:
Edmodo-- Students will complete a weekly "task list" centered around the classroom learning goals. Tasks will include work toward mastery, independent practice, review, remediation, and enrichment. Students will participate in on-line discussions and will post projects for peer review and/or teacher assessment. The task list will include the following (and maybe OTHER things, too.. depending on our week):
1. No Red Ink-- Students will complete weekly activities on a variety of concepts. Each student will create an account that will allow them to differentiate questions by INTEREST, and each student will complete activities at his or her own pace based on understanding of each concept. Students will track individual progress toward mastery, and I will view progress weekly to determine if extra whole group/small group lessons are needed on different concepts.
2. Vocabulary Tests for 7th Graders-- Students will learn and use a new list of 20 words each week through the completion of both self-selected and teacher-selected activities on this website and in a vocabulary notebook. Mastery will be exhibited through online tests weekly.
3. Newsela-- On a weekly basis, students will read teacher-selected and self-selected news articles in order to increase non-fiction literacy. Students will take a short 4-question on each article, and individual progress will be tracked.
OTHER classroom procedures
Daily--
M.U.G, D.G.P & S.W.T.-- Students will complete DAILY warm-ups and will work on grammar, usage and mechanics concepts through guided practice, independent practice and mini-lessons and will have opportunities to use all concepts in real-life writing opportunities using the Collins Writing Program, Sacred Writing Time, Google Docs (for teacher and peer editing) and writing workshops (Bless-Address-Press) and will work on creating a unique PERSONAL online writing portfolio using Blogger. Students will write DAILY during SWT (sacred writing time) and will develop a writer's notebook to use for future and ongoing writing projects.
Monthly or Quarterly--
R.A.F.T Projects & Presentations-- Students will read independently-selected novels (and materials from other genres) and will prepare projects and presentations on what they read. Students will select project types that are of high interest and provide an opportunity to experiment with different tools and media. Students will have an opportunity to conference with me during the time leading up to the presentation and will have a chance to share with peers, evaluate peers, and be evaluated by peers to encourage individual growth and self-confidence in oral presentation.
Other--
Socratic Seminar-- Students will practice asking and answering "thick" questions on a variety of topics.
