BDA= Before----During----After
Before you read:
1. First, before you read "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street", we will investigate the Cold War Era. You will answer these questions (all parts) on a sheet of notebook paper prior to reading the story. Use the links (in brown) to read the articles; they will help you to figure out the answers, but you will need to read and apply your "excellent reading" strategies and make some text-world connections! A. QUESTION: What is a "fifth columnist"? Here is another website to which you could refer. From where did the term come? How do you anticipate this set of"theories" or belief pattern will be involved in our drama? (Hint: it deals with the government) B. QUESTION: What is the Cold War era? What was going on at this time in our country? In the world? List a minimum of 3 details for each part of this answer. Watch this short video to help formulate your response. C. PREDICT: What impact do you think the setting within the "Cold War" will have on the storyline? *** NOTE: Watch the video (to the right) FIRST. It is a real example of what students YOUR age may have viewed in school during the Cold War era. 2. CONNECT: Next, complete the "Do Now" activity in your packet. Think about what "media hype" means… be prepared to discuss this. 3. Once you have done ALL of that, use the short definitions in your packet and complete the pre-reading vocabulary exercise by writing a sentence for each of the words. 4. NOW-- You are FINALLY ready to read the drama! As you read, be sure to mark the text with sticky notes, and answer the guided reading questions in your packet as you go! You will complete a Read like a Reader strategy sheet as well. You will need to use one of each strategy |

During Reading -- here you will find only the actual text, but some related pieces & the story packet, too.
